At the corner of 4th Street and State Street in downtown Troy is a small bakery known as X’s to O’s Vegan Bakery. Enter the door and the workers will smile with a greeting. Cakes and other treats adorn the counter, and next to it stands a bakery display full of cookies, cupcakes, and more.
If you aren’t vegan, you might be skeptical about how good these treats will taste. How can a cookie not have butter? Or a cupcake not have eggs? While I’m not too sure how they work their magic, X’s to O’s has many delicious goodies. Their supply changes day-to-day, as well as hour-to-hour. In late mornings, they often have cinnamon rolls. Cupcakes of different flavors with different frostings are available throughout the day. The tiramisu cupcakes are probably my favorite; recently, though, I had a delicious chocolate frosted cupcake with a strawberry on top that was extremely good as well.
Lunch can be eaten at X’s to O’s, too: smoothies, coffee, and sandwiches are other foods that can be bought from the bakery. Brownies, blondies, and other cookies make great accompanying desserts—and, of course, there are always cake slices.
Every other Saturday, there is a vegan brunch. The menu includes several items, which range from vegan macaroni and cheese to greens to pancakes. Again, despite being vegan, the food is really delicious. The next brunch is on Saturday, May 11th. The brunch food is sold by weight.
Prices generally range from $2–$4 for each treat (cakes are more). If you get two treats from the bakery display, you can also choose a day-old treat for free (which are half-price normally). If you remember to show your RPI ID before they ring you up, you also get a discount!
Next time you go downtown, check out X’s to O’s. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11AM to 6PM. Their website is here: http://www.xoxoveganbakery.com/
